Reawakening My Senses
As I walked this morning, I felt refreshed and uplifted by the smell of the dawn’s earthy air and the sound of birdsong that led to a re-energising and reawakening of my senses. I became aware not only of the smell but the coolness of the breeze on my face. The array of colours around me became brighter and more alive, and I took the time to enjoy this reawakening by connecting to my breath and immersing myself in the moment. After living with anosmia for twenty-five years, I was somewhat stunned a few years ago when I once again experienced the ability to smell and taste. I promised myself I would always feel gratitude for this reawakening of my senses.

Mindfulness and my connection to nature, in particular, have taught me how important it is to remember that when I look up and around me, I offer myself the opportunity to re-energise, reconnect, and reawaken my senses. My smell and taste may come and go, but my acceptance of this is what I draw on. In doing so, I am free to draw, be more playful, and enjoy the wonders of nature and life within and around me.
